Choosing Wheelchair Ramps for Home Safely

A single step at the front door can decide whether someone can leave home independently, welcome visitors or get to an appointment without assistance. The right wheelchair ramps for home remove that barrier, but the right choice is not simply the shortest or cheapest ramp available. It needs to suit the user, wheelchair, entrance and conditions around the property.

For many households, a ramp is part of a wider mobility setup that may also include a wheelchair, power assist, seating support and daily living equipment. Taking accurate measurements first helps avoid a ramp that feels too steep, too narrow or difficult to use in wet weather.

Start with the entrance and the wheelchair

Look at the full route, not just the step. Measure the vertical rise from the ground to the threshold, then measure the clear space available in front of the doorway and along the proposed ramp path. Check whether the door opens outwards, as it may need a level area for the user to stop and operate the handle safely.

The wheelchair matters just as much. Measure the widest point of the chair, including hand rims, side guards or any seating accessories. A powered wheelchair or scooter may be wider, longer and considerably heavier than a manual wheelchair. If a support worker will walk beside the user, extra width is valuable.

Also consider how the person uses the chair. A self-propelled user needs a gradient that can be managed without excessive effort. A person using a power chair needs enough flat space to approach, turn and stop safely. A carer pushing someone up a ramp needs a layout that reduces strain and avoids sudden changes in level.

Safe gradients: longer is often better

Ramp length is driven by rise. As a general accessibility benchmark, a gradient of 1:14 means 1 metre of rise requires 14 metres of ramp length. This can sound substantial, especially at a raised entry, but a gentler ramp is easier and safer for wheelchair users and carers.

Some portable ramps are designed for shorter rises and may be steeper. They can be useful for a small threshold or occasional access, provided the user can manage the incline and the product is suitable for the task. A steep ramp may be difficult to climb, challenging to control on descent and more hazardous when wet.

Australian accessibility requirements can apply to certain buildings and works, while local council, strata or body corporate rules may also affect a permanent installation. Requirements vary according to the property and project. For a fixed ramp, particularly one involving structural work, seek advice from an appropriate building professional or occupational therapist before proceeding.

Landings are not optional comfort features

A landing is a level platform that gives the user a safe place to pause, turn or open a door. It is especially important at the top and bottom of a ramp, at changes in direction and on longer runs. Without a suitable landing, a wheelchair can roll while the user is trying to unlock the door or manoeuvre around a corner.

A switchback layout can make a longer ramp fit within a smaller yard or verandah area. It uses two or more ramp runs with level landings between them. This can be a practical answer where a straight 1:14 ramp would extend too far towards a gate, driveway or footpath.

Types of wheelchair ramps for home

The best ramp type depends on whether access is temporary, portable or permanent. It also depends on the site, the user’s weight and mobility needs, and how often the ramp will be used.

Threshold ramps

Threshold ramps manage small lips at doorways, sliding doors and transitions between rooms. They are commonly made from rubber or aluminium and can help when a front door sill, bathroom entrance or balcony track creates a minor obstacle. They are compact, but they are not a solution for a larger step.

Check that the ramp will not interfere with the door opening or create a trip edge for other household members. A non-slip surface and stable placement are essential.

Portable folding ramps

Folding ramps are useful where access is needed at more than one location, such as a relative’s house, a community venue or a vehicle. Many fold in half or into multiple sections for storage and transport. Their convenience comes with a trade-off: a portable ramp still needs to be long enough for the rise and wide enough for the chair.

Before each use, place the ramp on firm, level surfaces and confirm that both ends sit securely. Check its stated load capacity against the combined weight of the wheelchair, user and any equipment carried on the chair. Do not assume that a ramp suitable for a lightweight manual chair is suitable for a large powered chair.

Telescopic channel ramps

Channel ramps use two separate tracks for the wheelchair wheels. They can be light and compact, making them useful for loading an unoccupied wheelchair or navigating selected low steps. However, they require careful positioning and are not suitable for every chair, particularly if the wheelbase, castor position or anti-tip wheels do not align well with the channels.

They can also be less suitable for an occupied chair because there is no continuous surface beneath the user. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and consider whether assistance is required.

Modular and fixed ramps

Modular ramps are assembled from components to create a tailored route, often with handrails, landings and turns. They are a strong option for regular home access because they can accommodate a gentler gradient and can sometimes be adjusted if circumstances change. Fixed timber, concrete or metal ramps can also work well when designed for the property.

A permanent solution takes more planning, but it generally provides the most dependable day-to-day access. Drainage, handrails, edge protection, surface grip and the condition of the supporting ground all need attention. Water pooling on a ramp is not a minor inconvenience - it can make a smooth surface slippery and speed up wear.

Details that make a ramp safer to use

A ramp should feel predictable under the wheels. Choose a surface with reliable grip, including in rain, and keep it free from leaves, moss, mud and loose gravel. Aluminium ramps are popular because they are durable and relatively light, while rubber is often suited to low threshold transitions. The ideal material depends on the location and expected use.

Raised edges or kerbs help reduce the risk of a wheel slipping off the side. Handrails can give valuable support to ambulant users, carers and anyone transferring between mobility equipment. For a longer or elevated ramp, these features deserve careful consideration rather than being treated as optional extras.

Lighting also matters. A ramp used early in the morning or after dark should be clearly visible from the entrance and the path. Avoid placing it where garden hoses, bins, parked cars or opening gates can obstruct the route.

Check capacity, compatibility and everyday handling

Capacity ratings are a safety limit, not a target. Add together the weight of the user, wheelchair, batteries, oxygen equipment, bags and any other items likely to be on the ramp. Powered wheelchairs can be significantly heavier than expected, particularly when fitted with tilt, recline or pressure care seating.

Consider the ramp’s usable width rather than relying only on a product name such as ‘standard’. A chair may technically fit but still leave no room for steering corrections. This is particularly relevant at a doorway, where the user may need to turn while passing through.

If the ramp will be moved regularly, consider who will carry, unfold and position it. A product that is easy to transport may not provide enough length for safe independent use. Conversely, a modular ramp may be the better long-term choice when access is required every day.

Planning support, funding and installation

An occupational therapist can assess the user’s mobility, transfer needs and home environment, then recommend a ramp configuration that supports safe access. Their input is especially useful for complex entries, progressive conditions, powered mobility or homes where several people use the ramp.
