A wheelchair that starts pulling to one side, has soft tyres or develops a squeaking castor can make an ordinary trip to the shops feel harder than it should. Knowing how to maintain a wheelchair helps protect comfort, independence and safety, while also helping parts last longer between replacements. The right routine depends on whether you use a manual, active, paediatric or electric wheelchair, but a few regular checks make a real difference for almost every chair.
Start with a simple regular check
Maintenance is easier when small issues are found early. A quick look over the wheelchair each week is often enough to catch a loose fastener, worn tyre tread or a build-up of dirt before it affects how the chair performs.
Before heading out, check that the brakes hold firmly, tyres feel properly inflated where applicable, and both wheels turn freely. Look over the frame, footplates, armrests and anti-tippers for obvious damage or movement. If something has changed suddenly - such as new wobble, rubbing, poor tracking or an unfamiliar noise - stop and identify the cause rather than assuming it will settle.
For wheelchairs used every day, set aside a more thorough monthly check. This is a good time to clean the chair, inspect moving parts and assess components that gradually wear down. Carers and support workers can also use this routine to report issues clearly and keep maintenance consistent.
Keep tyres, tubes and castors in working order
Tyres directly affect rolling effort, traction and comfort. Use a pump with a pressure gauge and follow the pressure range printed on the tyre sidewall.

Test brakes every time the chair is adjusted
Wheelchair brakes are designed to hold the chair in place during transfers, parking and daily tasks. They are not usually intended to slow a moving wheelchair. To test them, park on a level surface, apply both brakes and try to move the chair gently. The wheels should remain secure.
Brake performance can change after tyre replacement, tyre pressure changes or general wear. A brake that does not grip may need repositioning, while one that is difficult to engage may be rubbing against the tyre or require adjustment. Avoid forcing the lever, as this can damage the brake assembly.
Keep brake contact points clean and free from oily residue. If the brake is bent, loose, cracked or cannot be adjusted to hold securely, arrange a replacement or seek advice from a qualified wheelchair technician. Clean the frame and moving parts carefully
A clean wheelchair is easier to inspect and more pleasant to use. Wipe the frame, push rims, armrests, footplates and plastic surfaces with a soft cloth and mild detergent. Dry the chair thoroughly afterwards, especially around joints, bolts and metal components.
Avoid using high-pressure water, soaking the chair or applying harsh cleaning chemicals. Moisture can enter bearings and electrical components, while strong solvents can damage upholstery, coatings and plastic parts. After wet weather, beach paths or muddy ground, clean and dry the chair as soon as practical. Salt and fine sand are particularly hard on bearings, castors and metal fittings.
Moving joints may need a small amount of manufacturer-approved lubricant, but more is not always better. Excess lubricant attracts grit, which can create faster wear. Focus on the points specified in the wheelchair manual, wipe away any excess and keep lubricant away from tyres, push rims and brake surfaces.
Look after seating, cushions and positioning supports
Seating is not just about comfort. A correctly maintained cushion and back support can assist posture, stability and pressure management. Inspect cushion covers for tears, worn seams, damaged zips and moisture. Most removable covers can be cleaned according to their care label, but the foam, air cells or gel components may have different requirements.
For air cushions, check inflation at the frequency recommended for the product and look for leaks or damaged valves. The correct amount of air varies by cushion design and individual clinical needs, so do not guess or overinflate. If the cushion has been prescribed for pressure care or postural support, speak with the treating therapist before making significant changes.
Check straps, pelvic supports, headrests and lateral supports for fraying, loose buckles or altered positioning. Fasteners can gradually loosen through regular vibration and transfers. How to maintain a wheelchair with batteries and electronics
Electric wheelchairs and power assist units need the same tyre, brake, castor and seating checks as manual chairs, plus regular battery care. Charge batteries using the supplied or approved charger, in a dry and well-ventilated location. Do not use a damaged lead, loose plug or charger that becomes unusually hot.
Most power wheelchair batteries perform best when charged routinely rather than allowed to run completely flat. However, charging advice varies by battery type and manufacturer. Follow the equipment manual for charging frequency, storage and transport instructions. If the chair will not be used for a while, check the recommended storage charge and recharge interval.
Keep the joystick, charging port and control box clean and dry. Inspect cables for fraying, crushing or exposed wiring, especially near moving parts and underneath the chair. A reduced range, error message, intermittent power or a battery that no longer holds charge can indicate a battery, charger or electrical fault. These faults should be assessed rather than worked around.

Arrange a qualified inspection if the frame is cracked, the chair pulls strongly to one side, wheels wobble, brakes will not hold, the folding mechanism is difficult to use, or there is damage to cables or electrical controls. Do not tighten unfamiliar components at random. Wheelchair setup affects stability, posture and safe transfers, so adjustments to wheel position, seating geometry and power electronics need informed attention.
When ordering replacement parts, confirm the chair’s make, model and relevant measurements before purchasing. Tyres, tubes, castors, axles, brakes and cushions are not universally interchangeable.
