How to Fit Wheelchair Armrests for Comfort

A loose armrest can rattle, catch during a transfer or leave the user without the support they expect. An armrest set too high can raise the shoulders; one set too low can encourage slumping. Knowing how to fit wheelchair armrests correctly helps make the chair more comfortable, practical and safe for daily use.
Armrests are not a universal part. The fitting method depends on the wheelchair frame, the armrest style and whether the chair has removable, height-adjustable or desk-length armrests. Before changing anything, check the wheelchair manual and make sure the replacement part is designed for that make and model. If there is any uncertainty about compatibility, a wheelchair technician, occupational therapist or supplier can help confirm the right option.
Start by identifying the armrest fitting
Most manual wheelchairs use one of several common armrest systems. A removable armrest generally slides into a receiver or socket on the side frame and locks in place with a release lever, pull pin or locking knob. A height-adjustable version may have a second adjustment point, often a button, screw or clamp on the upright post.
Fixed armrests are usually bolted directly to the wheelchair frame. They are less convenient for transfers but can provide a stable, simple setup where removal is not needed. Flip-back armrests pivot upwards and backwards, creating more room to get close to a table, bed, vehicle seat or transfer surface.
Do not assume two armrests that look similar will fit the same chair. Receiver-tube diameter, mounting-hole spacing, post shape, lock location and left or right orientation can all vary. Paediatric, active and lightweight wheelchairs often use more specific hardware than standard folding wheelchairs.
What to check before fitting wheelchair armrests
Park the wheelchair on level ground, apply both brakes and remove bags or accessories that might obstruct the side frame. If the wheelchair has a cushion, leave it in place while checking armrest height, because the cushion changes the user’s seated position.
Inspect the receiver, mounting points and armrest post for dirt, bent metal, worn holes, damaged threads or cracked plastic. Wipe away dust and grit before inserting an armrest. Avoid using oil or grease unless the wheelchair manufacturer specifically recommends it, as excess lubricant can attract dirt or affect locking components.
For a removable armrest, check that the release lever or locking pin moves freely before installation. For a bolted armrest, confirm that the bolts, washers and spacers match the original configuration. Missing spacers can alter the armrest angle or place stress on the frame.
If an armrest has been damaged in a fall, vehicle loading incident or hard transfer, replace it rather than trying to bend it back into shape. A repaired-looking armrest may not lock securely when weight is placed on it.
How to fit wheelchair armrests step by step
For a removable armrest, hold the armrest upright with the padded section facing forwards and the mounting post aligned with the receiver on the wheelchair frame. Slide the post straight down into the receiver. Do not force it at an angle, as this can damage the post or locking mechanism.
Push until the armrest reaches its normal seated position and the locking lever, pin or catch engages. On many chairs, you will hear or feel a click. Gently lift the armrest without operating the release control. It should remain locked in place without lifting out or moving excessively from side to side.
For a flip-back armrest, lower it fully into its forward position before testing the lock. The pivot should move smoothly, but the armrest should not fold backwards under normal pressure. Check that it clears the rear wheel, tyre, brake lever and any clothing guard through its full movement.
A fixed or bolt-on armrest needs a more careful approach. Position the bracket against the frame in the same orientation as the original armrest, then insert bolts with the correct washers and spacers. Tighten them evenly, following the torque setting in the wheelchair manual where one is provided. Over-tightening can strip a thread, crush a tube or crack a plastic mounting block. Under-tightening can allow the armrest to loosen during use.
If the fitting does not line up easily, stop. Do not drill new holes in the frame or substitute random bolts from a hardware drawer. Wheelchair frames and mounting hardware are designed to work together, and an improvised installation can affect safety and warranty support.
Set the armrest height for posture and transfers
The best armrest height depends on the user, their cushion, trunk control, transfer method and the tasks they do throughout the day. When seated with the pelvis positioned well back in the chair, the user should be able to rest their forearms lightly on the arm pads without lifting their shoulders or leaning sideways.
A useful starting point is to check the elbow angle. With the hands resting comfortably, the elbows should be relaxed rather than pushed sharply upwards. If the shoulders are shrugged, the armrests are likely too high. If the user leans heavily onto the armrests, rounds forward or slides to one side, they may be too low or the overall seating setup may need review.
Height adjustment is commonly made by pressing a spring button or loosening a clamp on the vertical armrest post, moving it to the required setting, then securing it again. Adjust both sides to the same height unless a therapist has recommended an asymmetric setup for a specific clinical reason.
For many people, armrests also play a role in transfers. Some users prefer full-length armrests for greater support when standing or repositioning. Others need desk-length, removable or flip-back styles to get close to a table or use a transfer board. There is a trade-off: an armrest that offers strong support can reduce access, while a shorter or removable design can improve access but requires reliable locking and careful handling.
Check comfort, clearance and daily function
Once both armrests are fitted, ask the user to sit in the chair as they normally would. Check that the arm pads support the forearms without pressing on the elbows, restricting movement or rubbing the upper arms. The padding should feel stable and should not rotate on the armrest frame.
Then test everyday movements. Propel the wheelchair if it is self-propelled, operate the brakes, reach for the wheels and move through a doorway or beside a table. On an active wheelchair, armrests can interfere with efficient pushing technique, so some users may choose side guards or a different support arrangement instead. On a transit or attendant-propelled chair, armrests may be more useful for comfort and positioning.
Also check transfer clearance. With the brakes on and a carer present if needed, confirm that removable or flip-back armrests can be moved out of the way as intended. Never use an armrest as the only support during a transfer unless the wheelchair and the person’s transfer plan specifically allow for it. The chair should be positioned correctly, brakes applied and other supports used as recommended.
Common problems after fitting
If the armrest will not lock, remove it and inspect the receiver for debris or damage. Check that it is on the correct side and fully inserted. A locking pin that will not engage may be worn, bent or incompatible with the receiver.
If the armrest wobbles, first confirm that the lock is engaged. Some minor movement can be normal in removable systems, but noticeable rocking, rattling or lifting is a sign that the post, receiver or locking hardware needs attention. Do not pack the receiver with tape, cardboard or loose shims as a quick fix.
If the armrest sits at an odd angle, check for missing washers, a bent bracket or an incorrectly positioned spacer. On adjustable armrests, make sure both sides of the clamp are tightened evenly. If a padded top is split, flattened or loose, replacing the pad can restore comfort without replacing the entire assembly.
When to seek professional support
A seating review is worthwhile when armrest changes cause shoulder pain, pressure areas, poor balance, reduced hand function or difficulty with transfers. This is particularly relevant for people with changing posture, progressive conditions, complex seating needs or a history of skin breakdown.
