How to Choose a Transfer Board for Safer Transfers

A transfer board can make the difference between a difficult move and a controlled, confident transfer. Knowing how to choose a transfer board starts with understanding the transfer itself: where the person is moving from and to, how much upper-body strength they have, and whether they can reposition safely without standing.

A board is not simply a piece of equipment that bridges a gap. The right board needs to suit the user’s body, wheelchair, seating set-up and daily environment. It should support independence where appropriate, while reducing strain for carers and helping limit the risk of slips, skin shear and falls.

Start with the transfer, not the board

Transfer boards are commonly used for moving between a wheelchair and a bed, vehicle seat, shower chair, commode or lounge chair. They work best when the two surfaces are close together and at a similar height. In many cases, it is easier and safer to transfer slightly downhill than uphill.

Before selecting a board, consider whether the person can lean forward, lift or shift their weight through their arms, and follow the steps of the transfer. A person with reduced balance, limited arm strength, significant pain, cognitive changes or a high risk of falling may need hands-on assistance, a different transfer aid or a hoist instead.

A physiotherapist, occupational therapist or other suitably qualified clinician can assess transfer technique and recommend appropriate equipment. This is particularly worthwhile after a hospital stay, injury, change in mobility, pressure injury or wheelchair change. A transfer board should never be expected to make an unsafe transfer safe on its own.

How to choose a transfer board by size

Length is one of the first practical details to check. A shorter board is usually easier to store and position in tight spaces, but it may not bridge a larger gap securely. A longer board offers more reach for transfers across a wider space, such as from a wheelchair to a car seat, but can be harder to manoeuvre in a small bathroom or beside a bed.

For many everyday transfers, a medium-length board provides a useful balance between reach and handling. The right size depends on the gap between surfaces, the user’s reach and how much room is available to place the board. The board should overlap both transfer surfaces sufficiently, with a stable section under the user at all times.

Width also matters. A wider board gives more room for hand placement and controlled movement, which may help users who need a broader sitting surface or carer support. However, a very wide board can be difficult to position around wheelchair armrests, wheel guards or narrow seating spaces.

Check the thickness and edge profile

A thinner board can reduce the lip the user needs to move over. This is useful where sliding rather than lifting is part of the technique. At the same time, the board must remain stiff enough not to flex excessively under load.

Look for smooth, rounded edges. Sharp corners can catch on clothing, upholstery or skin, while a well-finished edge is generally more comfortable to grip and less likely to damage nearby surfaces.

Choose a shape that suits the destination

Straight boards are a practical choice for direct transfers where the wheelchair and destination can be positioned close and parallel. They are commonly used for bed, chair and car transfers.

Curved or banana-shaped boards can be useful when the user needs to follow a slightly angled path, rather than move directly sideways. This may help in a bathroom or other restricted space where the wheelchair cannot be placed in the ideal position. The curve is not automatically safer, though. It needs to match the user’s technique and the layout of the room.

Some boards have cut-out handles or hand holes. These can make the board easier to carry and may assist with placement. For some users, however, a hand hole can create an uneven area in the sliding path or add a point where clothing may catch. Consider how and where the person will sit and move across the board before choosing this style.

Material affects sliding, grip and maintenance

Transfer boards are commonly made from timber, plastic or composite materials. Each option has practical trade-offs.

Timber boards often provide a smooth sliding surface and a firm feel. They can be a good option for users who perform regular seated transfers and prefer a more controlled glide. Timber does require inspection and care, particularly in damp areas. A board with cracks, splinters, worn coating or moisture damage should not be used.

Plastic boards are generally lightweight, easy to wipe clean and well suited to bathroom or shower-area use when the product is designed for wet environments. Depending on the finish and clothing fabric, plastic may create more or less friction than timber. A board that is too slippery can reduce control, while one with too much resistance can increase skin shear and effort.

Composite boards may offer a balance of strength, lower weight and durability. The key is not simply choosing the lightest board. A lighter board is easier to carry, but the user still needs a surface that feels stable and predictable during the transfer.

Check the weight limit and stability

Every transfer board should have a stated safe working load or maximum user weight. Choose a board rated above the user’s body weight, allowing for the forces created as weight shifts during the transfer. Do not assume a thicker-looking board has a higher capacity.

The board also needs to sit securely on both surfaces. Check whether the ends have a non-slip finish, tapered shape or other feature designed to help stop movement. These features can be helpful, but they do not replace good positioning. The wheelchair brakes should be applied, footplates moved out of the way where possible, and armrests removed or swung back if the wheelchair design allows it.

Tyre pressure and wheelchair stability also affect the transfer. Soft tyres, an unlocked brake or a wheelchair positioned at an awkward angle can cause movement at the moment the user is most vulnerable.

Think about skin protection and clothing

Sliding transfers can create friction and shear, especially for people with reduced sensation, fragile skin or a history of pressure injuries. The board should have a smooth, clean surface with no damage, raised hardware or rough sections.

Technique is just as important as the board. Small, controlled moves are usually preferable to dragging across the surface. Clothing can affect how easily a person moves too. Seams, loose garments and slippery fabrics can change the amount of resistance from one transfer to the next.

If pressure management is a concern, seek clinical advice before introducing or changing a transfer board. A board may be part of the solution, but seating, cushions, transfer technique and the frequency of repositioning all need to be considered together.

Consider whether a sliding aid is needed

Some people use a transfer board on its own. Others may benefit from a separate sliding sheet, transfer pad or low-friction cover. These products can reduce effort for the user and carer, but they can also make positioning harder if they are not used correctly.

A board with a rotating seat or sliding component may assist a person who finds it difficult to shuffle across a fixed surface. These options can be useful for particular transfers, but they may add height, moving parts and a different learning curve. They should be selected based on the user’s assessed needs rather than convenience alone.

For assisted transfers, consider the carer’s position as well. Reaching across a wide gap, twisting in a confined bathroom or trying to control a transfer from an unstable stance can create avoidable injury risk. The best equipment choice is one that supports both people involved.

Match the board to everyday use

A transfer board that works well beside the bed may not suit a vehicle, shower chair or public bathroom. Think through the regular transfer locations before making a choice. Measure common gaps and note obstacles such as fixed armrests, raised toilet surrounds, shower screens, door frames and uneven flooring.

Portability may matter for people who travel regularly or transfer in the community. In that case, consider the board’s length, weight, carrying handle and whether it can fit in a wheelchair bag or vehicle. For a board used mainly at home, a slightly larger and more supportive option may be preferable.

Cleaning requirements should also match the setting. A board used near toileting or showering needs regular cleaning according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid using a damaged, wet or dirty board, as moisture and residue can affect grip and hygiene.

A safer set-up matters every time

Even the right transfer board can be unsafe if it is poorly positioned. Before each use, check that both transfer surfaces are stable, the wheelchair brakes are on, the board is fully supported at each end and clothing is clear of the edges. Keep hands away from pinch points between the board and the chair or bed.

The user should move in the way they have been taught, with assistance only where it is needed. Rushing, transferring over a large height difference or using a board on a wet floor increases risk. If a transfer feels harder than usual, stop and reassess the set-up rather than trying to force it.
